venturing into venture
I recently moved to a venture investing role at TechNexus. Our value proposition as a VC lies in providing large enterprises with creative corporate strategies by way of jointly investing in early-stage (Seed- / Series A) start-ups that are redefining and/or reimagining traditional business models across industries. We actively invest in public safety, aviation, audio and fitness, and look forward to partnering with more corporate partners to accelerate their next phases of growth.
As with every new job, there is much to learn. I have never really been a writer myself, but by writing I’d like to engage with the contents and the audience here to really absorb and learn as much as I can. I’ll be writing mainly about:
- Insightful resources to learn about venture capital
- Anything cool about urban tech / smart cities (an industry I’m most passionate about of late) as well as aviation, audio and fitness as I continue to learn on the job
- Occasional random blurbs about life as I see and live it
Through writing, I hope to achieve three things:
- Effectively log and organize my learnings over time
- Connect and interact with entrepreneurs and investors to learn more about creative and exciting ways to solve the most sophisticated problems of the world
- (Hopefully) develop this to an easy-to-digest and engaging channel to learn about venture capital
As a starter, I have identified for myself (in no particular order) below resources to pore through over the next however long it may end up taking.
Books:
- Secrets of Sand Hill Road by Scott Kapor
- Trillion Dollar Coach by Eric Schmit, Jonathan Rosenberg, Alan Eagle
- Thinking in Bets by Andy Ruke
- Angel Investing by Davis S. Rose
- The Startup Checklist by David S. Rose
- The Lean Startup by Eric Ries
- Venture Deals by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson
Podcasts:
- TechCrunch - Equity: Good general market update on the start-up world
- a16z Podcast: Relatively dense but insightful take on the world
- Sidewalk Labs - City of the Future: All about urban tech; my favorite
As I am still very new to the game, I’d welcome and appreciate any recommendations on books, podcasts, and/or any other educational channel through which I can enrich my understanding of the VC world.
Lastly, if you are building towards the future of public safety / urban tech, aviation, audio, and/or fitness, I’d love to chat - eugene@technexus.com. As our founder often says, onwards and upwards!
